The name Santo Mauro comes from a principality in Sicily, and the title "Príncipe de Santo Mauro de Nápoles" was first granted in 1705 by Philip V. In 1890, Mariano Fernández de Henestrosa was bestowed the title of Duke of Santo Mauro as a reward for his services to the crown. The ducal family still retains ownership of the palace, acting as its stewards.

Not many hotels can boast of occupying such a unique space that has survived so many different periods in Spanish history, that has shared its cuisine, its gardens and its lounges with ambassadors and intellectuals. And which still today retains its considerable appeal and fascination.
